The House of Culture and transformation of the Thorn House

Located within a park of mature trees, the historic Thorn House (19th century) was to be transformed into a cultural center capable of hosting around one hundred people. We chose to intervene gently in the house, preserving its original spaces while introducing complementary activities that align with the existing layout (such as offices for the local tourism board, artist workshops, etc.).

Cultural events, however, are hosted in a new pavilion situated at the eastern edge of the park. This approach not only organizes deliveries discreetly from the side, minimizing disturbances to the park, but also creates a calm, serene space for cultural activities, nestled within a lush setting of remarkable trees and shielded from the noise of route de Trèves by the original house, which retains its climbing plants.

Built with lightweight structures (steel, wood, and glass), this new pavilion gradually lifts off the ground as it extends further into the park. Its architecture contrasts distinctly with that of the Thorn House, yet its strong, complementary character allows it to engage in dialogue with the historic building. The old and the new are easily distinguishable and understandable, reinforcing each other’s distinctiveness.

Between the house and the new hall, we designed a courtyard with tiered steps and an open-air stage for outdoor events. This courtyard serves as both a connector and a separator, harmoniously integrating the old and new, ensuring a seamless union between the existing and contemporary architecture.
