A diverse and understated residential ensemble, rooted in the landscape of the Wiltz Valley
This project comprises 154 housing units and some commercial spaces distributed across four plots in the “Gierwerei” district, offering a wide variety of typologies suited to all lifestyles: one- to four-bedroom apartments, through-units, duplexes, and triplexes. This diversity addresses a broad range of needs while ensuring a balanced distribution within each building. All units are designed to be accessible to people with reduced mobility, with some fully adapted for independent assisted living.
The volumetric organization is based on a simple and homogeneous architectural language, combining compact residential units with open structures that host walkways, balconies, and terraces. The result is a clear and legible composition in which each dwelling is identifiable and fosters a sense of ownership. The layout encourages multiple orientations — often dual or even triple — ensuring high-quality natural light and views, especially toward the renatured area of the Wooltz.
The selected materials reflect a desire for architectural clarity: private areas are clad in wood and ribbed perforated metal, evoking warmth; communal areas — walkways and staircases — are treated with raw materials such as prefabricated concrete and powder-coated steel, asserting their functional and structural role. The load-bearing structure is reduced to slabs, stair cores, and a few punctual supports, allowing maximum flexibility for future adaptations. Facades are built from prefabricated timber elements, interior partitions are lightweight, and technical systems are exposed. The buildings are thus designed to be adaptable, repairable, and upgradeable to ensure long-term sustainability.
Standardized construction principles have been implemented to guarantee quality execution, cost control, and layout flexibility over time. Technical rooms, storage spaces, laundry facilities, and bike rooms are integrated at ground level or in the basement, with step-free access to streets and green areas. The triplex units feature private entrances and gardens, directly connected to the semi-public courtyards.
This residential development offers a pragmatic, sustainable, and restrained architecture that serves the everyday life of its inhabitants while fostering a strong connection to the surrounding landscape and uses.
