This project, initiated by the Mondorf-les-Bains local authority, aims to create affordable and transitional housing for young people and families in the municipality. The site involves two major challenges: to mark the eastern entrance to the village of Altwies in a high-quality manner, also in response to the neighbouring historic villas, and to integrate into the natural environment harmoniously, on the banks of the River Gander, by preserving the latter’s flood expansion zone and ecological corridors for wildlife.
This development, comprising four single-family homes and a residential building with four flats, combines these constraints to create an exceptional quality of life for future residents.
The houses have two contrasting faces: more massive on the street side, to the north, with openings in accordance with the traditional compositions of the neighbouring facades, and widely open to the south on the garden side, offering wide views of the river and the surrounding countryside from every floor. With their generous living areas and 4 bedrooms, they are ideal for families, who will also benefit from a private garden and a large south-facing terrace on the 2nd floor.
The residential building, located on a smaller plot, offers generous balconies on each floor, projecting the residents into the landscape. The alternating, fractured geometry of the balconies from floor to floor limits the shadows they cast and optimizes solar gain. As a result, the flats are very bright.
The interior spaces are optimized by rigorously stacking the floor plans.
The facades of the complex combine traditional materials – zinc cladding and mineral cladding – in a nod to the classic villas nearby, while at the same time offering a resolutely contemporary composition and detailing.
The project stands out for its urban and landscape integration, its respect for environmental constraints, and its commitment to sustainability.
