This housing project contributes to the transformation of Leudelange’s town centre by helping to create a new civic core around the shared space, Place du Lavoir, the renaturalised Drosbach stream and the future residential developments of the Bommert district. It brings together 39 affordable housing units, retail spaces, a restaurant, a pharmacy and a medical centre, creating an active and lively village centre throughout the day.
The building consists of a U-shaped volume framing the public square, complemented by a five-storey landmark volume marking its south-east corner. Its simple geometry clearly defines the public realm while opening towards the surrounding landscape and green spaces. The southern part of the site remains unbuilt in order to preserve existing community uses, including the annual village fair.
The project deliberately distinguishes the two faces of the building. To the north and east, access galleries provide circulation while encouraging encounters between residents. To the south and west, the dwellings open generously towards sunlight through an independent steel structure supporting the private balconies. This structure adds depth to the façades, preserves residents’ privacy and extends the living spaces outdoors.
The apartments, ranging from studios to four-bedroom units, comply with the requirements for affordable housing while offering a wide variety of dwelling types. Based on a 63 cm structural grid, they combine construction efficiency with flexibility, allowing the homes to adapt over time to changing household needs and ways of living.
The fully glazed ground floor extends the life of the public square through shops and local services, while entrance halls and service areas define the edges of the public realm. Corrugated metal cladding, exposed concrete access galleries and the independent steel balcony structures express a restrained architecture in which every element fulfils a structural, spatial and urban role. The project offers a durable living environment where housing, local services and public space together contribute to the making of a vibrant village centre.
