Located on the SES Pierre Werner Campus in Betzdorf, the Service Business Center was conceived as one of the first buildings in a new phase of development for the site. Set within a predominantly landscaped environment, the project adopts a simple, compact geometry, bringing together architecture, workplace quality and energy performance.

The building is organised over three levels. The ground floor occupies a 36 × 36 metre footprint, while the two upper floors step back over half of the volume. Around the building, a minimal landscape treatment of open grassland extends the surrounding landscape naturally up to its façades.

A large atrium extending through all three levels forms the heart of the project. It organises circulation, brings natural light deep into the building and encourages interaction between users. The ground floor establishes a gradual transition from public and shared areas to more protected workspaces. The cafeteria, located close to the entrance and extended by an outdoor terrace, opens towards the surroundings, while meeting rooms and shared spaces are arranged around the atrium.

On the upper floors, the office areas can be divided into several units and configured as individual offices or open-plan workspaces. A 1.80-metre structural grid defines both the internal organisation and the façades, providing a framework for long-term flexibility.

The energy concept is inseparable from the architecture. Compactness, high-performance insulation, carefully controlled glazing, solar shading and the thermal mass of the concrete structure reduce energy demand while ensuring user comfort. The concrete slabs are thermally activated to contribute to the cooling of the spaces.

Light-coloured fibre-cement façades, natural aluminium, galvanised steel, exposed concrete and timber form a restrained material palette that directly expresses the building’s construction principles.

Designed at a time when low-energy performance was still a pioneering ambition for office buildings in Luxembourg, the project demonstrates how energy efficiency, flexibility and quality of use can emerge from a single architectural approach.
